Running heavy weights (18+ Pounds) at significant depths (beyond 100’, usually beyond 200’), in conjunction with other component tolerances stacking up has been shown to trigger a shut down and warning on Optimum Downriggers in spite of the user not exceeding the published limits of the downrigger. The displayed warning says “Operation stopped to prevent damage”.
- The amp draw and rate the control board is seeing the reel magnets pass the depth sensor are outside the expected values, triggering the warning
- This is an issue caused by component variances stacking to result in a use case that is outside of expected safe operation; clutch tightness, input voltage, the motor, and the spool are all contributors to this scenario.
- This should not be a Control Board issue.
- If reasonable, the easiest resolution is running lighter weights on the affected downrigger.
Troubleshooting
- Verify the clutch knob is secure/fully tightened, and the clutch is not slipping.
- Have the Downrigger Battery Load Tested.
- Have a Cannon Authorized Service Provider evaluate the Downrigger. Click here for the Authorized Service Provider Locator.
